Academic Bowl
On March 20th, 2012 Hilbert, Brillion, Chilton, Mishicot, Reedsville, Valders, and Wrightstown competed in the Academic bowl. Each team was divided into seperate categories: Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, Mathematics, and Current Events. In the first round, we each had to answer 40, 50, or 60 questions in each category on computers. For round two, we marched into Chilton’s auditorium. Each category was called up one at a time and answer ten questions in front of an audience.
When everyone was done, it was time for awards. 7th place was Valders, 6th place was Wrightstown, 5th place was Reedsville, 4th place was Brillion, and 3rd place was Mishicot. It was then down to Hilbert and Chilton. Hilbert took second, losing to Chilton by only four questions. We were still happy because we beat a school record of 6th place.
The team members for each catagories were:
Science: Caleb D., 7th grade; Danielle L., 8th grade; Drake P., 8th grade
Social Studies: Connor K., 7th grade; Maria T., 8th grade; Jordan K.; 8th grade
Language Arts: Nina W., 7th grade; Mickayla M., 8th grade; Angela G., 8th grade
Mathematics: Bailey W., 7th grade; Emma Z., 8th grade; Jaqueline B., 8th grade
Current Events: Emma S., 7th grade; Garrett S., 8th grade; Bryce K., 8th grade
Substitute: Curt S., 7th grade
Career Connections
The 8th grade students have completed a brief course on careers recently with field trip to Fox Cities Career Fair at Players Choice in Appleton. The students have worked on their career course since late December. Ms. Kust set up the students on the WisCareers and WICareerPathways websites. The students filled out a lengthy likes/dislikes survey. Based on this survey, students were matched with possible career clusters they may be interested in. A career cluster is a type of job based on their interests that may suit them such as architecture and design, education and training, and information technology. The websites allow the students to explore who they are, where they are going, and how they are going to get there.
During English, the students researched the different career clusters and choose several jobs that may suit them from within the clusters. Based on this information, the students learned about what type of education is needed, financial information, and more in-depth knowledge about what the job requires. To prepare for the four year plan meeting, each 8th grader created a brochure and Photostory about 2 careers.
On March 28, the 8th grade headed to Appleton to attend a career fair. Numerous employees from a variety of professions attended in order to give the students a better look at the jobs. Each student was assigned to 3 different tables to visit based on their career surveys and their interests. The professional discussed their job for about 10 minutes, had the students do an activity related to the job, and then answered questions from the students. The 8th graders enjoyed the time to learn more hands on about professions they are interested in.

7th Grade Starfish Dissection
Have you ever wanted to dissect? The 7th grade just did on Wednesday Feb.22,2012. Before we could dissect, we had to learn about the body of fish, frogs, and starfish. We studied our vocabulary and the different types of invertebrates.
Before we dissected we made a Toontastic. Toontastic is an app for iPads where you make your own cartoon movie. This time we created ones about invertebrates and cnidarians. Mr. Stumo played them all in class.
When we dissected the starfish, we had to wear an apron and goggles. We were able to choose to wear latex gloves. Most people chose to wear only one glove.
After we got geared up, we had to get our tools. The tools we used the most were the scissors; in addition we also used a poker. Then we finally got to dissect our starfish. We had to start at one leg and cut around it so the top half would flip over. The starfish of course was dead. Ours were purple and had bumps that they use to sense things. When we cut it opened, its digestive system, which was pretty much all yellow, was all you could see. It was fun to do this. We still get to disssect a frog and a fish later. So to future 7th graders, you should look forward to it.
Winter Fest
Winter Fest was a huge success for all the classes. Overall lots of kids dressed up to show their class’s creativity. The days that the student council representatives chose for this year were a hit. On Monday, kids got to lay back and relax in their PJ’s. Tuesday was the complete opposite, crazy day. On Wednesday the halls were full of green, pink, and black for color day. 6th grade had green, 7th grade had pink, and 8th grade had black. Thursday was spirit day with a sea of blue and white. Overall I think everyone had a great time dressing up.
On Thursday at 9:30, everyone went to the gym for the Winter Fest games. Kids competed in 10 different games which include: wheelbarrow race, balloon pop, bubble gum in whipped cream, gummy life savers and tooth picks, mummy wrap, water balloon toss, bite the bag, 3 legged race, dress up relay, and face the cookie. At the end of all the games, and with the dress up days counted, both 8A and 8B were tied. The teachers decided to have a tie breaker. We had to pick 6 people from each class to shoot layups and whoever won, won winter fest. 8A ended up winning, but then there was a mistake in both classes. So then the decision was made to have another tie breaker. In this one, we had to have the same 6 people from each class shoot free throws. Whichever class made the most out of 20 won. But, yet again there was confusion. 8A was supposed to win but it was announced wrong. Eventually the entire 8th grade decided that it would be proclaimed a tie. So both 8th grade teams won. Great job everyone who competed in the games and dressed up for making Winter Fest a success.

Destination Imagination Well Under Way
Destination Imagination, DI, has been going on for several months now. DI is all about acting and having fun. When you are in DI, it is like a place where you can be yourself. In DI, there are 2 different challenges. The first challenge is called an Instant Challenge; you are given a random challenge with only a short time to prepare. The other challenge is the main challenge you prepare for several months.
There are three middle school teams who are coached by Terri Delvaux and Hillary Sweere with some help from Mrs. McGrath. The first team is a group of 8th graders. The members of this team are Sara G., Angela G., Alyssa B., Kayla K., Megan M., and Bryce K.. Our team name is Pause. As for the other middle school teams the 7th grade team is named M.V.D.T., Most Valuable Destination Imagination Team, and the 6th grade team is named The Six Musketeers. The 7th grade team consists of Caleb D., Emma S., Delany W., Carly S., Connor K., and Josh K.. Last, but not least, the 6th grade team members are Evan S., Andrea M., Amelia B., Makenna K., Sarah M., and Shania S. All teams will compete in a competition on March 24th in New Holstein.
Speaking for myself, it is tons of fun! If you are interested in doing it next year, I suggest you talk to Hillary Sweere.
Ice Skating
January 27th was fun for all at the Appleton Family Ice Center. We got to choose hockey skates or ice skates. We also got to get snacks from the vending machines. There was a gift shop too! Over half of the people were out on the ice. The teachers took a chance on the ice.
Out on the ice we had many falls. Thankfully, nobody got seriously hurt. People were having races and using chairs to keep balance.
Out of all the skates, I think the hockey skates were used the most because they were easier to use. For many of these people, it was their first time skating. I think everyone had a fun time at this special event.
Take some time to check out the Photoshow!

My Side of the Mountain
In the 6th grade classroom, they just finished a great book called My Side of the Mountain. They were put into groups of 4 or 5 people and were assigned a few fun group activities and some activities to do alone.
My Side of the Mountain is about a younger boy with seven younger brothers and sisters. He couldn’t handle New York because of all of the people in New York. He ran away to the family owned farm up in the Catskill Mountains of New York. He learned how to live off the land, how to make a home inside a tree, how to train a falcon, how to catch and skin a deer and much more. When people finally start to notice him, his secret just might be in trouble.
We discussed what we would bring out into the Catskills. We were also assigned roles to take part in our groups, like an animal expert, plant expert, camping expert, and the journalist. We explored the animals, plants, features, climates, and the seasons in the Catskill Mountains. We were asked where would we sleep, what would we eat, and what would happen when winter came if we were to run away from home. We were also asked if we could live without our everyday items. From reading My Side of the Mountain the 6th Grade has learned a lot.
